Product Safety & Care Guide

Effective Date: June 04, 2026

At SUNGUARD UMBRELLAS, we are committed to providing reliable outdoor shade products designed for patios, decks, gardens, poolside areas, backyards, porches, balconies, and outdoor living spaces. This Product Safety & Care Guide contains important information about handling, assembly, use, maintenance, storage, and general safety for outdoor umbrellas, patio umbrella bases, replacement canopies, and related shade products.

Please read this guide carefully before assembling or using your product.

1. Product Categories Covered

This guide applies to SUNGUARD UMBRELLAS products including, but not limited to:

  • Patio umbrellas
  • Market umbrellas
  • Cantilever and offset umbrellas
  • Solar LED patio umbrellas
  • Patio umbrella bases
  • Weighted umbrella bases
  • Fillable umbrella bases
  • Replacement umbrella canopies
  • Outdoor shade accessories

2. Packaging and Unboxing

Outdoor umbrellas and bases may arrive in large, heavy, or protective packaging to help reduce damage during transportation.

When opening your package:

  • Carefully remove all parts from the shipping box.
  • Avoid using sharp objects directly against fabric, cords, solar panels, lights, or painted metal surfaces.
  • Check the packaging carefully for small parts, hardware, solar panels, caps, knobs, screws, or instructions before disposal.
  • Keep packaging materials until you confirm that the product is complete and in good condition.

For solar umbrella models, the solar panel or light components may be packed separately inside protective foam or smaller packaging. Please check all packaging before throwing it away.

3. Assembly Safety

Always follow the assembly instructions included with your product. Improper assembly may affect product performance, stability, and safety.

  • Assemble the product on a flat, clean, and stable surface.
  • Make sure all screws, knobs, caps, poles, ribs, handles, and base parts are properly installed.
  • Do not force parts together if they do not align correctly.
  • Do not use missing, damaged, bent, or modified parts.
  • Check that all locking mechanisms, crank handles, tilt buttons, and rotation systems operate correctly before use.

4. Umbrella Base and Stability Requirements

Outdoor umbrellas must always be used with a properly secured and weighted base. Using an umbrella without proper support may cause tipping, product damage, or unsafe conditions.

  • Use a compatible base designed for your umbrella size, pole diameter, and umbrella style.
  • For cantilever or offset umbrellas, use the correct cross base, fillable weight panels, or weighted base recommended for that umbrella type.
  • For fillable bases, fill with the recommended material such as water, sand, or wet sand as directed in the product instructions.
  • Make sure fill caps are fully closed and secured before use.
  • Place the base on a flat and stable outdoor surface.
  • Do not use patio umbrellas with loose, undersized, empty, unstable, or incompatible bases.

Weighted bases help improve stability, but they do not make umbrellas windproof.

5. Weather and Wind Safety

Outdoor umbrellas are designed for shade and general outdoor comfort. They should not be used during unsafe weather conditions.

  • Close and secure the umbrella during strong wind, storms, heavy rain, snow, or severe weather.
  • Do not leave the umbrella open when unattended.
  • Do not use the umbrella as protection from extreme weather.
  • Do not allow water, snow, or debris to collect on the canopy.
  • Always close the umbrella when not in use for extended periods.

Vented canopies may help promote airflow, but they do not prevent wind-related movement or damage.

6. Solar LED Umbrella Care

If your umbrella includes solar-powered LED lights, follow these care instructions:

  • Install the solar panel according to the included instructions.
  • Place the umbrella where the solar panel can receive direct sunlight for charging.
  • Charging performance may vary depending on weather, season, sunlight exposure, and battery condition.
  • Keep the solar panel clean and free from dust, leaves, and debris.
  • Turn lights off when not needed to help preserve battery power.
  • Do not submerge solar panels, batteries, switches, wiring, or LED components in water.
  • Do not attempt to modify or repair electrical components unless instructed by the manufacturer.

7. Replacement Canopy Compatibility

Replacement canopies must match the correct umbrella frame size and design. Before purchasing or installing a replacement canopy, confirm the following:

  • Umbrella size
  • Canopy shape
  • Rib count
  • Rib length
  • Top opening size
  • Umbrella style, such as market, cantilever, offset, square, round, or rectangular

Do not force a replacement canopy onto an incompatible frame. Using the wrong canopy may damage the fabric, ribs, frame, or opening system.

8. General Product Care

Proper care helps maintain the appearance and function of your SUNGUARD UMBRELLAS product.

  • Clean canopy fabric with mild soap, water, and a soft cloth.
  • Allow fabric to air dry completely before closing or storing.
  • Wipe metal, steel, aluminum, resin, or plastic parts with a damp cloth when needed.
  • Dry metal components after exposure to moisture.
  • Inspect screws, knobs, poles, ribs, crank systems, tilt mechanisms, wheels, caps, and bases regularly.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals, bleach, abrasive cleaners, or pressure washers unless specifically allowed by the product instructions.

9. Fillable Base Care

For water-fillable, sand-fillable, or wet-sand-fillable bases:

  • Fill the base only as directed in the product instructions.
  • Do not overfill beyond the recommended capacity.
  • Make sure fill caps are closed tightly before use.
  • Check the base regularly for leaks, cracks, loose caps, or wear.
  • Empty and drain the base before long-term storage when recommended.
  • Keep fillable bases away from extreme temperatures when not in use.

10. Moving and Handling

Umbrella bases and large umbrellas may be heavy or awkward to move. Use caution when lifting, carrying, rolling, or repositioning these products.

  • Remove the umbrella from the base before moving the base whenever possible.
  • Do not drag heavy bases across delicate surfaces.
  • Use wheels only on suitable flat surfaces.
  • Lock wheels when the base is in position if wheel locks are included.
  • Ask another person for assistance when handling oversized or heavy items.

11. Fire and Heat Safety

To reduce the risk of product damage or unsafe conditions:

  • Keep umbrellas, canopies, bases, and accessories away from open flames.
  • Do not place products too close to grills, fire pits, patio heaters, fireplaces, or other heat sources.
  • Do not expose fabric, plastic, solar components, or electrical parts to excessive heat.

12. Children and Pet Safety

  • Keep plastic packaging materials away from children and pets.
  • Do not allow children to climb on umbrella bases, poles, ribs, or frames.
  • Do not allow children to operate crank, tilt, rotation, or locking mechanisms without adult supervision.
  • Store small hardware pieces away from children and pets during assembly.

13. Product Appearance and Variations

Minor variations in color, texture, finish, stitching, dimensions, or surface appearance may occur due to manufacturing processes, lighting, screen settings, or production batches.

These variations are normal and do not necessarily indicate a product defect.

14. Storage Recommendations

For best results during extended periods of non-use:

  • Close and secure the umbrella canopy.
  • Use a protective cover when available.
  • Store umbrellas, canopies, and accessories in a dry, covered area.
  • Remove or protect fabric canopies during harsh weather seasons.
  • Empty fillable bases before long-term storage when recommended.
  • Store solar components away from excessive moisture and extreme temperatures.

15. When Not to Use the Product

Do not use the product if:

  • The umbrella frame is bent, cracked, unstable, or damaged.
  • The base is cracked, leaking, empty, unstable, or incompatible.
  • The crank, tilt, rotation, or locking mechanism does not operate correctly.
  • The canopy is torn in a way that affects safe use.
  • Parts are missing, loose, or improperly installed.

If you are unsure whether the product is safe to use, stop using it and contact customer support.
